How Can I Study Hairdressing Online?
Through a Virtual Classroom!
The future of hairdressing education is here. With our innovative online program, you can earn your qualification with unprecedented flexibility while still receiving world-class training.
At the heart of our program is Pivot Point’s industry-leading digital platform, giving you access to professional tutorials and resources 24/7. No need to stick to class schedule, you can learn when it works for you, practice and submit assessments at a time that works for you.
To begin, you’ll need just a few simple things: a device with internet access, a way to record your work (your smartphone is perfect), and a space to practice. Whether that’s in a professional salon, your workplace, or a home setup, we’ll help you create an effective learning environment.
We’ve thought through every detail to make online learning work:
Special student pricing on professional tools and products
Additional support from educators when you need it
The ability to fast-track areas you master while taking extra time where needed
This is hairdressing training redesigned for more flexibility. When you’re ready to begin, we’ll help you every step of the way.
These guidelines explain how online and flexible study works at TMT Education. They cover course structure, attendance flexibility, home practice
rules, practical assessment methods, what you must submit for each unit, technology requirements, and how you submit evidence.
The requirement in one sentence
For every technical unit (cut, colour, bleach, style, braid, basin, massage, straighten, scalp) your assessor must see you perform the service — live at
campus, live on Zoom, or by approved unedited video — on a paying or commercial-expectation client in an approved salon. A workplace supervisor
checklist and photos of the finished result are extra. They do not replace the video or live observation.
1. Course structure and live sessions
This course uses a blended, flipped-learning model.
Before each live session or attendance at the training salon you are expected to:
• Complete the required theory reading and online modules in Pivot Point LAB
• Watch all pre-recorded practical demonstration videos
Live online sessions are not traditional lectures. They are structured opportunities for:
• Asking questions about the theory and demonstration videos
• Receiving clarification and feedback from the educator
• Participating in supervised practical practice and skills training
Educators may occasionally demonstrate techniques during the live session and record these demonstrations for later student reference. Coming
prepared (having completed the pre-work) allows you to gain the maximum benefit from supervised practice time.
2. Flexible attendance for work commitments
Live sessions are scheduled two days per week and provide valuable supervised practice and support. Some students, due to ongoing work
commitments, are unable to attend the scheduled live sessions. Where this is declared at enrolment, TMT may approve a flexible attendance
arrangement for the duration of the course (or a defined period).
Under an approved flexible arrangement you must still:
• Complete all theory content and pre-recorded demonstration videos according to the course schedule
• Undertake regular practical practice in your own time
• Maintain satisfactory course progress
• Complete all practical assessments that require paying clients in an RTO-approved environment
Flexible attendance is approved in writing at enrolment (or as soon as the work conflict is declared). TMT monitors engagement with learning
materials and overall progress. If engagement or progress becomes unsatisfactory, the arrangement may be reviewed and additional support or a
return to live attendance may be required. A flexible arrangement does not reduce the requirement to develop practical skills to the industry standard
required by the qualification.
3. Catch-up and recordings
• Live sessions are recorded where practicable.
• Students on a flexible arrangement must access and complete the relevant recordings and associated practice activities within the timeframe advised
by the trainer (usually within 7 days).
• Use catch-up time productively to complete any linked activities, quizzes or practice tasks.
• If you are falling behind, contact your trainer early so support can be arranged.
4. Self-paced practice
Between live sessions (or in place of them under a flexible arrangement) you are expected to:
• Complete online modules and learning activities in Pivot Point LAB on schedule
• Practise the skills demonstrated in the pre-recorded videos and any live demonstrations
• Build speed, accuracy, consistency and commercial readiness before formal assessment
Regular, focused practice is essential. Students who practise consistently perform significantly better in practical assessments.
5. Home practice space – skill development only
You may set up a practice area at home. This space is for skill development only.
What is allowed
• Practising on mannequins
• Practising on yourself, family members or friends free of charge
What is not allowed while you are a student:
• Charging clients for hairdressing services
• Advertising hairdressing services to the public
• Operating a commercial home salon (unless the limited conditions in Section 6 are fully met and TMT has verified the premises in writing)
Important – state rules:
In NSW and South Australia it is an offence for an unqualified person to provide hairdressing services for fee, gain or reward. Even in other states and
territories, once you start charging clients from home you may need local council approval and will be treated as running a business. Your home set-up
is for practice and skill development only. It is not an approved environment for formal practical assessments that require paying clients, unless TMT
has verified a genuine home-based commercial salon under Section 6.
6. Practical assessments – paying clients
Many units in the Certificate III in Hairdressing require you to demonstrate skills on paying members of the public in a proper hairdressing
environment. This is a training package requirement and cannot be waived because you study online.
Approved assessment environments
• The RTO’s student training salon (preferred); or
• An approved commercial salon (including supervised chair-rental or structured work-placement arrangements); or
• In limited cases, a student-operated home-based commercial salon, only where ALL of the conditions below are met.
Conditions for a home-based commercial salon (limited use only – all required):
• Current local council approval to operate as a home-based hairdressing business
• The space operates as a genuine commercial salon regularly serving paying members of the public
• The environment meets all Assessment Conditions (client traffic, commercial speed/timing, required tools and equipment)
• You are not in breach of state/territory legislation restricting unqualified persons from providing hairdressing services for fee/gain/reward (noting that
in NSW and South Australia this is generally an offence)
• TMT has verified the suitability of the environment in writing prior to assessment
• Formal assessment is by live observation (in person or live video) by a qualified assessor, and all required evidence is retained by TMT
Home premises used only for unpaid practice (mannequins, family/friends) are NOT accepted for units requiring paying clients. TMT may require
assessment in the student salon or an approved commercial salon if not satisfied that a home-based arrangement fully meets the conditions or
legislation.
7. How online students are assessed
Online and flexible students complete practical assessments that require paying clients by attending the campus student salon for scheduled practical
assessment days, or by completing the assessment in an approved commercial salon while being observed by the assessor (in person or via live video
such as Zoom).
Live video observation is permitted only when you are working on paying clients in an approved hairdressing environment, the assessor can clearly
observe the required skills, techniques, client interaction and commercial conditions, and suitable technology, lighting and camera positioning are
used.
TMT approved assessment methods for technical units:
• Method A – Hybrid (preferred when possible): live Zoom start with the educator, then continuous unedited video of the remainder of the service.
• Method B – Fully continuous unedited video: no live educator presence; the full service is recorded continuously with the authenticity controls in
Section 9.
• Method C – Controlled segmented video: a documented reasonable adjustment for long services only (typically colour, bleach or chemical services
exceeding about 90 minutes). It is not the default.
Live assessments (Method A) are normally conducted Monday and Tuesday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm via Zoom. Limited alternative windows (9–10 am
or 5–6 pm) may be approved on special request only.
Photo sequences, finished-result-only photos, or heavily edited “highlights” videos are not accepted as the primary evidence for technical units.
Assessment Conditions cannot be waived because you study online.
8. Method C – controlled segmented video (long services only)
Continuous recording of a full 3–4 hour service can be impractical. Where the service is longer than approximately 90 minutes you may use Method
C as an approved reasonable adjustment. Your educator will record this on your assessment file.
Segment When What must be captured
1. Opening Start of service Photo ID + verbal ID + assessment code; client verbal confirmation and consent; full consultation; start of
technical work (12–15 min)
2. Mid-point During active work Clear view of technique, sectioning, product application; brief re-statement of name + assessment code (5–8
min)
3. Processing If applicable Client under process; any monitoring you perform; time reference (2–3 min)
4. Closing End of service Removal / rinsing / finishing; finished result; clean-up and disinfection; client brief confirmation (8–12 min)
Mandatory safeguards for Method C (all required):
• Unique TMT assessment code stated or visible in every segment
• Student photo ID and verbal identification at the start of Segment 1, and briefly re-confirmed in Segments 2 and 4
• Completed and signed Client Confirmation Form submitted with the videos
• Client clearly visible and giving verbal confirmation in the opening segment
• Visible time-stamps (device clock) so sequence and overall duration can be verified
• Each segment is continuous and unedited within itself
• Service records / formulas / consultation notes submitted with the package
• Short written or verbal timeline of the full service (start time, key stages, finish time)
• You must be available for assessor follow-up oral questioning after the videos are reviewed
8A. What you must submit – student evidence map
Keep this page next to your assessment dates. Your educator will not mark a technical unit Competent on a salon checklist or photos alone.
Technical units – video or live observation is compulsory
Units: Shampoo and basin, massage, colour, highlighting, toner, bleach, all haircut units, beard/moustache, braid, finished designs, up-styles, chemical
straighten/relax, hair and scalp conditions.
You must give TMT all of: (1) knowledge assessment, (2) live observation or approved unedited video of the full service on a paying / commercial
client in an approved salon, (3) signed Client Confirmation from that day, (4) consultation notes / formulas, (5) availability for oral questions after the
video. If you work in a salon, also give the third-party checklist — it helps, it does not replace the video.
Salon operations units – one real-salon sample plus the checklist
Units: Tools and work areas, client base, financial transactions, providing salon services, organisational requirements, team communication, WHS and
hygiene.
You must give TMT: knowledge assessment, at least one assessor-visible sample of real salon practice (live, Zoom walk-through or short unedited
video), and the third-party checklist if you have a workplace. Photos of a clean station can support the file. They are not enough on their own.
Support units – workplace samples
Units: Environmentally sustainable work practices, receive and handle retail stock.
You must give TMT: knowledge assessment, dated workplace samples (for example stock sheets or waste/recycling records), the third-party checklist,
and a short verification with your assessor. A full client-service video is not usually required for these two units.
If you do not have a workplace, tell your educator. Do not invent a supervisor. You will complete technical assessments at the campus salon or
another TMT-approved salon, and the video / live observation still applies.
8B. Before I submit this technical unit – student checklist
Use this checklist every time you submit a cut, colour, style, basin, scalp or chemical service. Tick each item that is true, then send the pack to your
educator.
- My photo ID and TMT assessment code are on camera at the start (and in every Method C segment).
- The service was done in an approved salon on a paying or commercial-expectation client — not an unpaid home practice.
- I am submitting live Zoom observation or an unedited video of the full service (Method A, B or approved Method C). I am not submitting photos
only. - I performed every part of the service myself. No one else did the technical work off-camera.
- The signed Client Confirmation Form for this service is attached.
- Consultation notes / formulas / service records are attached.
- Files are named YourName_UnitCode_Date_FullVideo (or _SegmentX) and I have kept a backup.
- I am available for oral questions if my assessor contacts me.
- If I work in a salon: the third-party checklist is attached. I know it does not replace the video.
- If I do not work in a salon: I have booked campus or an approved salon instead of attaching a supervisor form.
- Unit code I am submitting
- Date of service
9. Authenticity controls (all methods)
• Show photo ID and clearly state your full name, student ID, date, unit code(s) and unique TMT assessment code at the start
• Client Confirmation Form completed on the day of the service
• Client visible in the video and gives verbal confirmation that you performed the service
• No editing, cutting, speeding up or altering of any video segment
• Assessor may contact you for oral questioning to confirm authenticity and understanding — this is part of the assessment
10. Camera, environment and evidence
• Landscape orientation, stable support (tripod or stand — not hand-held for the main recording)
• Clear view of hands, tools, technique, client hair and workstation
• Bright, even lighting
• Environment must meet Assessment Conditions: commercial or properly simulated commercial salon with paying clients / commercial expectations
• Evidence must show the full service (consultation, technical skills, finishing and client care), that clients were paying members of the public,
completed consultation records, and any required product, timing or workplace documents
11. How to submit video evidence
You are responsible for submitting complete, unedited files. Your educator is responsible for downloading them into TMT’s records so they are
available for assessment, validation and audit.
• Save the complete unedited video file(s) to your own cloud storage (Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox or OneDrive)
• Check that the file plays correctly and is the full version — do not submit compressed previews
• Create a shareable download link and send it to your educator together with your full name, student ID, unit code(s), TMT assessment code, date of
service, Client Confirmation Form and service records / formulas
• Name files: YourName_UnitCode_Date_FullVideo or YourName_UnitCode_Date_SegmentX
• Keep a backup until you have received your result and any appeal period has closed
Links can expire or be deleted. TMT will download the file into its own system; do not treat the cloud link as the official record.
12. Quick reference
| Activity | Allowed? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Miss live sessions due to work (approved at enrolment) | Yes | Must complete all pre-work, recordings and practice; maintain progress |
| Practice at home on mannequins | Yes | Strongly encouraged |
| Practice on family / friends free of charge | Yes | Skill development only — not formal assessment |
| Charge clients at home while studying | No | Legal and compliance risk, especially NSW and SA |
| Formal assessment on paying clients | Yes – approved salon only | Campus student salon or TMT-approved commercial salon |
| Live Zoom / Teams assessment | Yes | Only in an approved environment with paying clients |
| Method A Hybrid or Method B continuous video | Yes – with controls | Authenticity controls in Section 9 must all be present |
| Method C segmented video | Yes – long services only | Documented reasonable adjustment; oral questioning required |
| Photos or edited highlights as primary evidence | No | Not accepted for technical units |
13. Support
If you have work roster issues, technology problems, difficulties with practical practice, or concerns about assessments, contact your trainer as early
as possible. We are here to help you succeed while maintaining the standards required by the training package and the regulator.
Reasonable adjustment (including Method C for long services) is available where needed. Ask your educator before the assessment date so the
adjustment can be documented.
14. Equipment and technology declaration
- Online and flexible study requires you to have, and to keep available throughout the course, the equipment and internet access needed for live Zoom sessions and for recording and uploading practical assessment videos and photographs.
- I have a computer, tablet or smartphone that can run Zoom (or Microsoft Teams) for live classes and live practical observation.
- I have a camera (built-in or external) that can record practical work in landscape orientation with a clear view of my hands, tools, the client and the workstation.
- I can support the camera on a stable stand or tripod so the main recording is not hand-held.
- I can provide bright, even lighting so the assessor can see technique, product placement and the finished result.
- I have stable internet access sufficient for live Zoom sessions and for uploading large unedited video files.
- I have (or can create) cloud storage such as Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox or OneDrive so I can store and share download links for assessment videos.
- I can show photo identification on camera at the start of a practical assessment and state my name, student ID, unit code and TMT assessment code.
- I understand that kit, tools and products required for practice and assessment are my responsibility unless TMT has advised otherwise in writing, and that associated costs were disclosed before enrolment.
