Is online study right for you?

Online study at TMT means you join live makeup classes on a video link, from your own workspace. It is not a course you complete in your own time with recordings only.

You will still work on live models, submit the same assessments as campus students, and take part in photoshoots. Special effects work in this diploma is makeup-department level (simple latex bald caps and transfers), not a full prosthetic laboratory.

Read this document before you enrol so you know what we expect.

1. How the course is taught

• Scheduled live video classes each teaching week — you join at the published time.
• Camera on, unless your trainer agrees otherwise for a short activity.
• Practical work completed to the same briefs as students in the studio.
• The same assessment due dates and professional standards.

Some practicals cannot be finished from home. Those are booked as a live observed session: a campus day or a live remote session where your trainer watches you work on a model.

2. Computer and internet access

You supply your own equipment and connection. TMT does not provide a computer or home internet. If you cannot meet the list below, choose on-campus study instead.

Device

• A laptop or desktop computer. A phone or tablet alone is not enough — you need to see demonstrations clearly and upload folio files.
• A working webcam and microphone. Your trainer must be able to see your face and your work surface when asked.
• Speakers or headphones.
• A way to photograph and film short clips of your practical work. A phone camera is fine for evidence photos.

Internet

• Stable broadband suitable for live video. A practical guide is at least 5 Mbps upload and 10 Mbps download.
• A mobile hotspot is a backup only. It is not the planned connection for every class.
• If the link drops, rejoin and message your trainer. Repeated connection problems are treated as an attendance issue, not as permission to study offline.

Software

• Login to TMT’s live-class platform and learning system (issued after enrolment).
• A current web browser and the ability to upload PDF, photo and video files by the due date.
• An email address you check on every class day.

Join the tech-check session before term starts. If camera, microphone or uploads do not work, fix them before Week 1. A tech problem on Day 1 is not an approved reason to skip live class unless you have already reported it and been given a workaround.

Class recordings and course materials stay inside the learning system. Do not post them publicly or share your login.

3. Attendance

You are expected at every scheduled live class for the units you are enrolled in.

Joining and leaving immediately, or sitting off-camera and not responding, is not attendance.

We do not catch a term’s classes up from recordings at the end. If absence means your trainer cannot see your progress, we will contact you and may put a support plan in place.

4. If you cannot join live

Watching a recording later is an exception, not the normal way to study. Ask before the class wherever you can.

How to ask

• Email Student Admin and your trainer.
• Give the date(s), a short reason (work, personal or medical — you do not need to share private medical detail), and how you will complete that week’s practical.
• Wait for written approval. Until then, you are expected in the live class.

If the exception is approved

• Watch the recording within the time given — usually seven days.
• Submit that week’s evidence (plans, photos or a short video, as listed).
• Book a catch-up observation if that session was a formal assessment.

If it is not approved

You attend live, or the session is recorded as an absence. Doing this repeatedly is treated as non-attendance.

Regular work roster

If your job regularly clashes with one of the two class days, write to us once at the start of the term. We may agree a standing pattern for that term only (for example, live on Day 1 and an approved recording for Day 2). It is reviewed each term. It is never a full term off-camera.

5. Practical work from home

You work on live models — friends, family or paid models who have given written consent. Applying makeup only on yourself in a mirror is not enough for units that require apply and remove on a performer.

6. Special effects in this diploma

You will create and apply makeup-department effects — simple latex bald caps and transfers — not full sculpted prosthetics.

• Making the two items can be done at home with your kit.
• Putting the effect on a live model, holding the look, and removing it must be watched live by an assessor.
• A folder of still photos sent later is not that observation.

If you cannot attend an observation date in that term, those units are held for the next available session. They are not signed off from unsupervised home study.

If you will never be able to be observed working on a model, speak to Student Admin before the census date so we can discuss timing or your training plan.

7. Assessment

• Due dates are the same for online and campus students in that term.
• Specialised makeup and special makeup effects can only be recorded as competent after foundation makeup (CUAMUP411) is competent. You may submit work earlier; the result waits.
• If you withdraw, a Statement of Attainment lists only units already assessed as competent.
• Uploading files is not the same as attending class, and it is not the same as being assessed competent.

8. Safety and conduct

• Treat models, classmates and trainers with professional respect.
• Follow hygiene and product-safety instructions, including patch tests before latex or adhesives.
• Stop and contact your trainer if a model has a reaction.
• Do not record other students or models without written consent.
• Course materials are for enrolled students only.
